Senior photos are essential to documenting an important milestone; High school graduation! In this blog post I will cover everything senior photos, including when to book your session, what outfits to wear, and printing your portraits.

When should I book my senior photos?

Inquire two months before your desired session date. The spring or summer before senior year, the fall or winter during senior year, or in the months before graduation are great options.

When I was a senior the standard practice was to have your senior photos taken the summer before senior year. Though this is still a popular choice, I like families to know that it's also an option to have your senior photos captured during senior year. The months leading up to graduation, like April and May, will allow me to capture your student as an actual senior, rather than as a junior going into senior year. Young adults tend to change so much and styles choices and trends change as senior year goes on. Spring and summer will have blooming flowers while the fall will boast brightly colored leaves. Keep in mind, the photos will look best in whatever month or season you choose!

What should I wear? Where should we go?

Wear outfits, hairstyles and makeup that are true to you.

Locations can vary from lush green gardens to colorful street art. I will provide location recommendations based off your style!

Outfits? Hair? Locations? Oh My! Don't fret- I've got your back, your front and your good side, too! The outfits, your style, and the locations you choose should reflect who you are. I like to see seniors in a few different outfits during the session to differentiate the gallery:

1) A dressy outfit such as a dress and heels or a suit/dress shirt, and dress pants

2) Something casual, like a college t-shirt and ripped jeans with your favorite (clean) sneakers

3) A sports uniform (be sure to being all the equipment including cleats, ball, bat etc.)

If something listed above isn't quiet your style or you didn't play sports in high school, that's fine! My point here is to choose a few different outfits that showcase the different and unique sides of you.

Hair and makeup should be true to your normal style. Now isn't the time to try something new and bold, just be the best version of yourself! Your senior photos should capture you when you are most confident and comfortable. If you wear glasses everyday, then you should wear your glasses in your photos. If you don't feel pretty in a fancy dress and heels, opt for dress pants, a blouse and flats.

Depending on which package is right for you, you may choose the option of taking photos at more than one location. Josh, a 2021 graduate from Roseville, chose to take photos on the soccer field at his school, Belle Isle and spots in Downtown Detroit. (Check out some photos from his session below.) These were fantastic locations because we were able to take photos in different environments, capturing some of his favorite places from his high school days. When you book your session, we will work together to choose the perfect locations for you.

Should I print my photos?

Yes, yes, yes! Print those photos! You will receive all your photos via a digital

gallery so you can download, print, post and share.

I believe photos were meant to be printed. Yes, I love that digital photos are easy to store and share, especially with family, friends, and on social media. But there is something special about holding a physical, printed photograph in your hands and finding the perfect spot for it on a wall or mantle in your home. Not to mention getting wallets printed of your favorite senior photos!

Long gone are they days of going to a big box department store for photos, only to be talked into purchasing packages that include poses and sizes you don't need. After I have hand edited and retouched your photos I will deliver them to you via a digital gallery to be downloaded to your smart phone or computer. Once they are downloaded you have the ability to share, post and print anywhere you'd like.

Need a little more assistance? I offer print consultations to help you organize and order the prints you need. In these sessions I provide expert advice on sizing, crop ratios, where to send your order, and more. We will order wallets to share with friends, an 8 x 10 for the grandparents, and graduation party invitation cards for all your family and friends. We will meet locally and get your photo print order submitted the same day!
